A soil sampler working for diamond company Mbada Diamonds was arrested and brought before a Zimbabwe court on charges of theft. Luckson Magwere, 32, is suspected of attempting to smuggle several dozens of diamonds out of the mine where he worked, Zimbabwe media outlet Newsday reported. A judge remanded Magwere until May 14 on $50 bail.
Magwere is accused of taping 35 diamonds to his arm using adhesive material and attempting to walk out of the plant with them. A Mbada scan operator noticed what he thought was a suspicious object protruding from Magwere's jacket and asked a security guard to conduct a full search on Magwere's person. The thorough search turned up the diamonds.
The precise number of carats Magwere is accused of attempting to steal has not yet been ascertained.
