Diamond mining operations and other major economic projects must go through environmental assessments and other approval processes in order to receive permission to move forward from the Canadian government. Harry Winston chair and chief executive officer Robert Gannicott said that the new regulations instituted by Prime Minister Harper's Conservative government would speed up the approval process, thereby creating more construction jobs for Canadians, which would in turn strengthen the country's economy, which has also been adversely affected by the global economic crisis of recent years.
The Harry Winston Diamond Corporation is a part owner of the Diavik diamond mine in northern Canada and also owns and operates a chain of diamond jewelry retail stores across the country and abroad.
