Briza Diamonds - Picking Up Where Nature Left Off

Fancy colored diamonds take one’s breath away, but they are extremely costly. The price of a pink diamond from the Argyle mine currently stands at somewhere between $200,000 and $250,000, not exactly an affordable price for the average consumer.

This is where Briza Colors - managed by Amnon Barak, Shai Barak and Lior Izboutzky - enters the picture. Amnon Barak notes that his company produces color enhanced diamonds for a tenth of the price of a naturally colored diamond.  “We pick up where nature left off. A natural diamond which had the potential to emerge colored undergoes various processes deep in the earth. Sometimes, the diamond is exposed to high pressure on its way to the surface which rearranges the structure of several atoms within the diamond’s crystal. If light penetrating the diamond is made to disperse differently inside the crystal, the color of the diamond will no longer be white but rather one of the shades of the rainbow.”

Briza Colors has developed a method for coloring diamonds which does not involve radiation. The process, which has FDA approval, is completely clean. Barak explains that the process is similar to that used for sterilization in hospitals or food packaging and complies with all US federal regulations. Each diamond is accompanied by a certificate, just like white diamonds.

Up to now, the company manufactured color enhanced diamonds in shades of black, blue, green, yellow and orange. A handful of companies worldwide manufacture color enhanced diamonds but they do not offer as wide a range of colors as Briza, which produces 14 different shades including 3 blues, 4 greens, 2 cognac colors and more.

Barak states: “Over the years we have developed expertise – we know just how much time and pressure are needed for each diamond size and cut and our success rate is 99.9%. However, only lately were we able to develop an effective method to color diamonds pink: We figured out which kind of diamond is most likely to take on the pink shades – pink, red and purple. The pink diamond is extremely rare in nature.”

Briza Colors manufactures its own range of colored diamonds and sells its stones to jewelry companies and leading designers worldwide.  “The company works with the top league of the diamond jewelry industry worldwide. We export color enhanced diamonds to many countries in Europe, the United States, Asia and the Far East. The Swiss watch industry has entered the field and they purchase pave diamonds to adorn their watches. Italian designers, including the renowned Palmiero, use Briza Colors’ color enhanced diamonds.”

In addition to its own business of manufacturing color enhanced diamonds, the company also colors diamonds for a wide range of customers and it regularly receives boxes with thousands of carats for coloring.

Two years ago a clear trend became evident in the industry: the endeavor to lower the price of the final product – diamond jewelry. One of the ways to bring down the price of a diamond studded piece of jewelry is to use brown diamonds or diamonds with black pique. But the problem is that these flaws are visible even to the naked eye.

Briza Colors offers a solution: Barak explains, “Once we color the diamond, the imperfections are no longer noticeable. This opens door for designers, offering them infinite possibilities, and lowers the price of the jewelry piece at the same time.”

At a time when the world diamond jewelry industry is in a crisis and the customer’s purchasing capabilities have been reduced, Briza offers a breath of fresh air and enables the sale of diamond jewelry at affordable prices. “While the diamond jewelry market has recorded a slump, we have increased manufacturing by 10%. I predict that in the future the penetration of color enhanced diamonds into the market will expand considerably.”
