According to a press release by Christie's of New York, the pear-shaped stone was bought by an anonymous buyer.
At Christie's in London last week, several other large diamonds and fine jewelry pieces got better-than-expected prices , including an Art Deco pendent set with a circular-cut fancy yellow, SI1 diamond weighing 44.14 carats, which sold for $865,324 or $19,600 per carat. Another diamond that beat expatiations was a cushion-shaped F/ VS2 diamond weighing 10.09 carats that sold for $414,064, or $41,000 per carat, much higher than the $277,950-$310,650 estimate.
The sale at Christie's in London included high end diamonds and vintage jewelry from makers such as Cartier, Bulgari, and Van Cleef and Arpels.
