Austin Zvoma, Zimbabwe's clerk of parliament is reportedly backing an investigation by the Committee on Mines into questionable aspects of the government’s development of the controversial Chiadzwa diamond field , Marange district, where a range of human rights violations are believed to be taking place.
Parliamentary sources told the Voice of America that with Zvoma's support, the committee has the power to demand Mines Minister Obert Mpofu, and the elusive directors of Mbada Holdings, a partner with the government in developing the rich Marange field, answer questions on those business relations.
Zvoma reportedly told the committee that it "can exercise powers conferred by the Privileges, Immunities and Powers of Parliament Act should Mpofu and Mbada directors snub the panel."
Meanwhile the Movement for Democratic change formation of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has demanded that all mining in Marange be halted until the parliamentary probe is completed and the government has a coherent plan for developing the resource.
