Pepe Fanjul, a Cuban-born sugar baron and one of the world's richest men, was robbed of several millions of dollars worth of jewellery over the weekend, after a thief tricked his way into his Los Angeles hotel suite.
Fanjul and his wife, Emilia, were in Los Angeles to attend several Academy Awards functions. According to the UK's Telegraph, the two were robbed by a man posing as a technician at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons Hotel.
The robber allegedly came to the couple's room under the pretence of fixing their air conditioner. Once in the room, he took several valuables, including Emilia's jewels, and fled.
The Los Angeles Police, added the report, have been able to linked the crime with a similar incident which took place in October 2009, in which a visiting Israeli basketball team was robbed of valuables worth $22,000.
