India’s Rough Diamond Imports Still on the Rise, While Exports Decline

According to IDEX online, the sturdy rough diamond trading that has been taking place in recent months in India is mirrored within the sudden jump in the country’s imports of rough diamonds, as during the month of October, India imported an estimated worth of $607.77 million in rough diamonds, constituting a rise of approximately 33.5% compared to the imports of October 2008.
In contrast to this rise in imports, the export of rough diamonds in India went down considerably, standing at approximately $51.97 million this October compared to the $86.76 million exported in October 2008, with an additional decline in the export of approximately 1.63 million carats compared to 3.54 million carats during October 2008. This decline, however, is one of growth, not of trade, as the India intake of rough diamonds during September 2009 rose in drastic manner by a figure of nearly by nearly 83%.
