At the AWDC's emergency Diamond Symposium held in Belgium on Monday November 17, Moti Ganz, President of IDMA, called the GJEPC's decision to ask its members to refrain from purchasing rough diamonds for a one month period "a brave and important step."
Ganz also called on all of the diamond manufacturers associations worldwide to ensure that their coming steps will help them to cope with the repercussions of the global financial crisis on the diamond industry. Ganz appealed to these leaders to carefully consider their responsibility as the employers of over one million diamond polishers and as polished diamond manufacturers who acquire rough diamonds from mining companies that employ hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.
In addition, Ganz appealed to all of the partners in the world diamond industry - rough diamond producers, rough diamond traders, manufacturers and jewelry chains - to invest in generic diamond marketing.
IDMA will not make rash decisions regarding the diamond industry's future, noted Ganz. However Ganz emphasized that the organization will not hesitate to make difficult but vital decisions.
